ABOUT US

What was a dream for me slowly turned into a story of family hands working side by side.

Our youngest son Sam, owning and operating his own business Hardy & CO Construction, had a gap in his busy work schedule and suggested we strip back the beaten and broken walls to see if it was salvageable.

More than two decades of neglect, cautiously brick by brick, carefully board by board we began to see the solid bones, strong and ready for their new life.

Under Sam's guidance, soon it was as though the whole family had been chosen to bring this special structure back to life after being left to the elements for some time.

We have so much love for the community, and a shared respect and appreciation for the old ways, it felt so right for this and us.

Old Brick Pub’s History

Aged just 25 years Charles Johnson purchased land in the Parish of Young, County of Monteagle situated on the Burrangong Goldfield in March 1867. In 1871, a newspaper article suggests improvements to the building to the value of 25 pounds 3 shillings Charles then aged 29 years old. He married in 1872 to Sarah Johnson aged 22 (same last name).
Their first son was born the next year in 1873.
A Publican's licence was granted by the Bench of Magistrates to Charles Johnson for his house near the bridge over Garibaldi Gully, on the Burrowa road, to be called the Burrangong Hotel.
Charles advertised Wines, Spirits, Alk Porter of the best brands and in prime condition.
"Good beds, a well furnished table, and every comfort for Boarders and Visitors. Secure well grassed Accommodation Paddocks with plenty of water, Charges Moderate.”
The birth of their second son Frederick in 1875. Charles died 2nd January 1882 aged 40. The licence was transferred to Charle's widow Sarah that year.
The licence then transferred several times until 1922 when the liquor and signs were removed and the doors closed.

Then slowly over time it made its way into our hands.
Now here we are, The Old Brick Pub once more.
This is the beauty of history.
